Fidelity Releases Charitable Giving Report 2013: A Look at Donor-Advised Funds

Fidelity Investments has just released a dynamite new report  (like to download at the end of this post) which gives us a look at giving trends from among their own portfolio of 57,000-plus giving accounts.  Most noteworthy:

  • Over the past decade, the total volume of grants made on behalf of donors has grown each year, nearly tripling from more than 154,000 in 2003 to nearly 429,000 in 2012
  • Over the past five years, the percentage of unrestricted grants has risen, from 37% to 42% of total grants
  • Religion, human services and environment/animal welfare recipients lead the way from the Fidelity portfolio.  While no date is presented to suggest why this is the case, one may surmise that these three sectors tend to emphasize “high touch” cultivation/fundraising practices (congregational involvement, direct response vis a vis mail or web, media buys and exposure).
